Victor is a treasure of historic sites, drives and activities. Year-round explore the 1890's gold rush legacy from railroads to mining to milling and ranching.

Gold Belt National Scenic Byway

Situated on the Gold Belt National Scenic Byway, Victor is at the junction of railroad routes which serve as today's highways. Nearby Florence offers a full day of antique shopping, the Royal Gorge is a short drive away and 6 miles west, Cripple Creek casinos offer the chance to strike it rich. Victor shops house antiques, art, Victorian tea, a restored 4-story hotel and a soda fountain that serves up the best chocolate shakes anywhere. Skaguay Reservoir is a pristine mountain fishing spot and hiking opportunity.

Photographic Paradise

Victor is a photographer's paradise with its wonderful wildflowers, headframes and 1890's weathering buildings.

 Gold Mining

Cripple Creek & Victor Gold Mining Co. is  the largest gold mine in the state,  reaping ore from the gold-rich caldera that was part of the volcanic formation. The new mine offers a perspective, and an appreciation for the efforts of the gold rush pioneers. You can see first-hand the toil and back-breaking labor that went into gold mining in the 1890s at the Victor Lowell Thomas Museum and the Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine, Views of the modern mine from the American Eagles Scenic Overlook and Little Grouse area show how technology has improved the miner's endeavors.

Arequa Gulch Bridge

Just to Victor’s west on Highway 67 you will cross the highest bridge on the Colorado State Highway system. The bridge across Arequa Gulch was built in 2000-2001 as part of a highway realignment project to accommodate the expansion of the Cripple Creek & Victor Gold Mining Company’s (CC&V) valley fill facility. CC&V financed the design and construction.
Completed in just 11 months, the $18 million realignment project is one of the largest highway projects in the state to be financed completely with private dollars.
The new roadway is 1.9 miles long, replacing a 1.8-mile segment. The most spectacular part of the project is a 1,218-foot long bridge over Arequa Gulch. The bridge, which is 250 feet tall at its highest point, is the tallest bridge of Colorado's 8,479 bridges on the state highway system. The bridge provides travelers with unparalleled views of the Sangre De Cristo Mountain Range.

A portion of the project also involved building a scenic pullout area that enables travelers to view the mountain range and the valley far below. These are views which have never before available from the highway. At the pullout is the trailhead for the Little Grouse Mountain Tail, a project of CC&V, interpreted by the Southern Teller County Focus Group as part of its Trails of Gold project. The trail winds up the mountain to a summit with a 360-degree view of the western and southern mountains as well as nearby mountaintops.

Victor is almost two miles above sea level; 9,780 feet to be exact. This makes our quiet mining town a cool get-away and a perfect place to vacation. Central to the Gold Belt National Scenic Byway, Victor offers cool mountain air and quiet respite within driving distance to all the popular attractions.

A few precautions while staying here:

You may experience shortness of breath or other discomforts. The high elevation affects your breathing and heart rate and will also affect how much alcohol you may consume. Please drink responsibly and never drive under the influence of alcohol.

Our weather is unpredictable. Like most mountain towns, mornings and evenings are cool. Nights can drop into the 30s even in summer. This makes for a wonderful night's sleep - no air conditioning needed!

While the summer is filled with sunny warm days in the 70s, it can also be rainy and even snow. Bring a warm jacket and clothing to ensure your stay is comfortable. These weather changes offer grand photographic opportunities and a chance to experience the real mountain climate. July is often wet and that brings out the colorful wildflowers that cover the mountainsides.

In the winter, the locals enjoy sunny days and often when it's snowing in Colorado Springs and Ute Pass, southern Teller County is basking in sunshine. Take extra precautions when driving in the mountains in the winter. Pack warm clothes, emergency food, a blanket and chains. Bring your hiking boots as most trails near Victor are easily hiked in the winter.

Road conditions are available by checking the Colorado State Highway Patrol website or the weather cam on Cripple Creek’s website at www.cripple-creek.co.us.
